The Year of the Tax Increase

Tax Rate Increase:

The City of San Benito City Commission tonight voted unanimously to increase the effective tax rate by 4 cents from .688125 to .728125 per $100 home valuation.

The reason given is the funds will be dedicated to street repair.

StormWater surcharge:

I don’t have all the information but I believe there will also be a $1.50 residential and $2.75 commercial monthly surcharge on the water bill to pay for the new stormwater program. As soon as I find out some more about it, I will post it here!

Water Rates:

The “Good News” is there won’t be an increase in the water base rate.

The bad news however is for residents using in excess of 2000 gallons there will be an increase rate per 1000 gallons as follows:

2001    to 5000 gallons increase by .13

5001    to 10,000 gallons increase by .18

10,001 to 15,000 gallons increase by .03

Summary:

I am calling this the “Year of the Tax increase”!

The San Benito CISD and the Cameron County Commissioners Court are also considering raising our taxes.
